Branston - A Christmas Storyboard
Project type
Storyboard Visualization
Date
2020
Role
Lead Story Artist / Designer / Storyboard Art
I had the privilege of collaborating as the Lead Storyboard Visualizer on the heartwarming Branston Pickle "Hit of Home" TV ad, directed by filmmaker and friend Charlotte Regan. Over an intensive two-day period, I worked closely with Charlotte to bring her vision to life through a series of rushed yet precise storyboards that laid the foundation for the campaign's visual storytelling. The final advert, produced by Wonderhood Studios and featuring an original score by Patrick Jonsson, went on to become an award-winning moment for both the director and the agency.
The Story:
The ad captures the emotional journey of a young woman who has recently moved to the city for a new job. Feeling disconnected, she receives a surprise package from her parents—a jar of Branston pickle. This thoughtful gesture reminds her of home and lifts her spirits as she prepares a cheese and pickle sandwich while listening to a heartfelt voicemail from her parents.
The Message:
The campaign embodies the idea that a simple, nostalgic gesture—like a jar of pickle—can bring back the warmth and comfort of home. It highlights the emotional connections families maintain, even at a distance, and how food can evoke powerful memories and feelings.
My Contributions:
Storyboard Visualization:
Worked closely with Charlotte Regan to storyboard her vision in just two days.
Delivered a visual blueprint that emphasized the emotional arc of the story, from the woman’s initial feelings of isolation to the heartwarming moment when she reconnects with her family through the gesture of Branston pickle.
Focused on capturing the nuances of the character's expressions, the cozy atmosphere of the "home" flashbacks, and the intimate details of the cheese and pickle sandwich preparation.
Marketing Asset Design:
Following the success of the ad, I was invited to create social media, print, and video marketing assets to support the broader campaign.
Designed visuals that extended the "Hit of Home" narrative, reinforcing the emotional connection of the brand across multiple platforms.
Developed creative materials that maintained the campaign’s warm, nostalgic tone while ensuring visual consistency across digital and traditional media.
Results:
The "Hit of Home" TV ad resonated deeply with audiences, not only winning acclaim but also positioning Branston as more than just a condiment—it became a symbol of home and heartfelt connections. My storyboards were integral in shaping the narrative's visual flow and emotional depth, which carried through to the award-winning final production.
This project demonstrated my ability to quickly translate a director’s vision into actionable visuals and to extend a campaign's reach with cohesive marketing assets across various mediums.
